We know it can be frustrating when your device won’t connect to Wi-Fi. The good news is that most connection issues can be fixed with a few simple checks. Follow the steps below to get back online.
Before you start
Make sure your router is plugged in, switched on, and that your device is close enough to pick up the Wi-Fi signal. If you can see your Wi-Fi network name but cannot connect, the steps below should help.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Check your Wi-Fi name and password
- Check you are choosing the correct Wi-Fi network name.
- Carefully re-enter your Wi-Fi password, as it is easy to mistype.
- Remember that some letters are case-sensitive, so check whether capital letters are needed.
- Make sure Caps Lock is not switched on.
- If your device supports WPS, press the WPS button on your router and then on your device to connect without typing the password.
- If it still will not connect, forget the network on your device and then reconnect.
Step 2: Move closer to your router
- Wi-Fi coverage can vary depending on your home, including the size of the property, the thickness of the walls, and where your router is placed.
- Move closer to your router and try connecting again.
- Make sure your router is in an open space and is not hidden behind furniture, inside a cupboard, or blocked by other objects.
Step 3: Check your router is online
- Check that your router is plugged in and switched on.
- Look for the power light on your router.
- If the router is on but you still cannot connect, switch it off at the plug.
- Wait for a couple of minutes, then switch it back on.
- Allow a few minutes for the router to fully restart before trying to connect again.
Step 4: Restart your device
- Turn your device off, or choose the restart option.
- Wait for it to fully restart.
- Try connecting to your Wi-Fi again.
Step 5: Try connecting with an Ethernet cable
- If you have an Ethernet cable, connect your device directly to the router.
- If the internet works using a cable, the issue may be with the Wi-Fi signal rather than the Fibre connection.
- If the internet still does not work using a cable, there may be an issue with the connection or router setup.
